  US news article about low JW education causing problems in life - interesting

  good article, a must read, from my perception.. i did a bachelor and master since 2001, having the same opinion, for a better present and future and for my and family sake: being an educated person, gaining respect and being proud of what i could realize in life.

  Great article. The problems I saw with the members of my family that were JWs were similar to what Amber mentioned. The parents weren't qualified to teach. They had no formal learning themselves no real interest in seeing that their children got an education. Also there was a lack of discipline. The children did whatever they felt like doing all day. They had no preparation for the real world and it is hurting them now. Not much chance of any child raised that way ever going to college.
  

  Then you have the ones that loved school and wanted to learn and get a better education but were denied by their parents. I know a lot of those also.

  I remember the late Bill Cetnar saying he told Knorr that he would like to go to school and become an attorney. Knorr told him there wasn't enough time left. That must have been in the 1940s so about 70 plus years ago. Or maybe it was the fifties. Anyway a long time ago.

  Its really sad how they ruins kids dreams and replace them with peddling magazines for their fantasy kingdom.

  Thanks for the reply. I'm always interested in what wakes people up. From what I've seen it can be just about anything. With me the meeting went first. I was still a JW in parts of my mind but couldn't stand going to the meeting. I would do anything to avoid going to them.

  My wife is also still a JW so I can understand the frustrations associated with that.
  

  If I were you I'd smoke a little of you wife's pot be for going to the meetings to make them a little more tolerable.

  So what happened after that NikL? Did you start seeing all the flaws in what you were taught? Did you continue going to meetings?

  i remember when i was about 17, i started shunning an older brother because he was disfellowshipped.

  when i graduated high school, he pulled me aside and said " i know you are not supposed to talk to me, but i want you to have this" it was a gift that he had custom made for me.

  i was so blown away, we never even had a real conversation before.

  Yes, there were lots of witnesses in the area where I lived that were good people. When I was young and had no money I had a JW loan me one of his cars for about a month when mine wasn't working so I could get to work. I always had lots of help whenever I moved or needed help with something. I always had friends to do things with. Go to the beach. Ski trips to Mammoth etc.
  

  My problem was never with the people (well most of them) I just didn't believe it was the truth anymore and didn't want to be a Jdub anymore. The hardest thing for me was knowing that most if not all of the witness I knew would have nothing to do with me once I left but it had to be done. I'm sure I would have left a lot sooner if I had the some of the experience I see people post here with elders and witnesses at the halls they attended.

  This might be the most useful thing ever done at a Kingdom Hall. Most of your time there is wasted learning religious nonsense about the end of the world and how you will only survive by doing what doing whatever the nut jobs in Brooklyn come up with. At least this is practical information that might help you in the real world disaster.

  "I myself, Jehovah, will speed it up in its own time." Yup it's moving right along. Over 40 years since 1975. Over 100 years since the return if Christ in 1914. Does anyone remember how they went full throttle in the years preceding 1975? I'm amazed that anyone still buys into their BS. Same old lies to the same old people. Nothing ever changes in Jehovah land.

  If witnesses were allowed to talk to people that have left the Watchtower it would lead them asking them questions about why they left. That wouldn't be in the Watchtower's best interest. Better to paint those who leave as monsters to be avoided at all costs.

  Dont Give Them More Power Than They Deserve

  a new montra that was recently adopted by the wife and i is this:.

  dont give them more power than they deserve.. here's why i say that, and i point this to those of you still in the congregation, still trying to decide what you want to do.. recently, our family had a little family reunion gathering of sorts, and we were in the company of some extended family that were either df or da, to varying degrees.

  we made it very clear, to any and all in attendance, that we wanted to be respectful and kind, despite any previous perceptions about our "status".... and that our feelings on a lot of things had "softened", and "changed" over the last 2 years.. i am being purposefully slightly vague, but i think you get the point.

  If you want to have some fun with them show up with your own microphone on Sunday. Make sure yours is bigger than theirs.

  Great post. Definitely an empowering moment when you realize that there is no reason to fear them. They only have the power over you that you allow them to have. In reality they have less authority than a crossing guard.

  All they need to do is put a disclaimer on the bottom that say "If you are currently disfellowshipped Jehovah doesn't want you back yet. Just sit at the back of the hall and don't talk to anyone and don't expect anyone to talk to you. We'll be watching you.".

  Amazing how paranoid they become when asked a simple question. Right away they want to find out who you are and what you are up to.
